Occasional Papers

Occasional Papers are are called Occasional Papers because they are not produced at scheduled times, but when the editors have received a sufficient number (typically, 4—5) of papers to publish a collection. (We hope this will be at least twice in each calendar year.)

The aim is to provide an outlet for people within the Diocese of Ballarat to write out their thoughts and ideas relating to the Christian faith, and thus share them with others in the diocese, and perhaps beyond. The papers are usually short essays, but may include other genres of writing (for example, this second edition includes a poem).

What is the purpose?

The purpose of the Occasional Papers is to provide a platform for anyone who would like to make a contribution to contemporary attempts to understand the Christian faith, particularly (but not necessarily exclusively) within the context of Anglican churches. It is aimed at a wide readership, not simply at the clergy or people who enjoy exploring deep intellectual ideas. In other words, it is not intended as an academic theological journal, but as a sharing place, where 21st-century Christians can communicate their personal reflections with one another. We hope that it will give rise to personal responses in a range of readers throughout our parishes, and will stimulate them to interact and engage in helpful exchanges with one another.
