Lenten studies
The Bible nowhere mentions Lent (or indeed any other seasons or holy days of the liturgical year), which means we are free to observe it, or not.

Why might we choose to observe Lent? What are its purposes? The primary reason is to strengthen our relationship with God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—which will also enhance the ways we relate to one another and to our own selves.
In order to encourage and assist Christians to explore the purpose of Lent and perhaps undertake Lenten disciplines, weekly group discussions are held through the weeks leading up to Holy Week. These Lenten series usually focus on a book of the Bible that helps us to consider carefully the core elements of our faith and how to live out that faith every day.

A series of Lenten studies will be conducted by Rev Dr Mark Garner, in two parallel sessions. If you would like to participate in person, come to Synod Hall from 5.30 to 6.30 p.m. on Mondays 23rd February, 2nd, 9th, and 16th March. There will also be on-line Zoom sessions, also at 5.30—6.30 p.m., on Tuesdays 24th February, 3rd, 10th, and 17th March.

This year, we will be extending the familiar, highly personal Lenten devotions by exploring how our communal life as the church, a body of the faithful, might reflect and express each individual’s faith. What should our church life be like in the coming year and the years ahead?
How might we start working towards becoming an exemplary faith community in our society?
We will consider these matters in the light of Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians, who were a group of believers who Paul felt embodied and manifested the true church of God.
