Getting to know your Bible
Two or three series of studies of specific books of the Bible are offered each year. Each series consists of four or five sessions: for an in-person group in Synod Hall on consecutive Mondays, and on-line on consecutive Wednesdays. Both run from 5.30 for one hour.
We attempt to understand each book both as an example of human-to-human communication and as a means through which God communicates to us today. In exploring the first theme, we seek to bring the book to life by answering questions such as: who wrote it; when; to whom; and why? These answers help to make the writing more relevant and intelligible to us, and thus more meaningful as the Word of God.
Format:
The sessions are less like lectures than round-table discussions: the emphasis in both groups is on participants’ contributions. Everyone is encouraged to raise questions, express doubts, and share insights.
Notes:
Notes, with questions for reflection, are provided after each session, for follow-up reading and preparation for the following week’s get-together.
